Long Meg and her Daughters

This is the prehistoric stone Long Meg in Little Salkeld in Cumbria.

This is an amazing stone circle, with 59 huge stones (her Daughters) spread evenly. Nobody knows how they arrived there. It’s not clear what it was for. It could be a burial site. It could have been a place to trade, or socialise. Some said the stones were a coven of witches turned to stone by a wizard. It’s a site of pilgrimage for pagans particularly at solstice (you can see the flowers at the base of the stone)

A neighbouring farmer was less enamoured. He tarmaced a road right through it. A previous farmer tried to blow up the stones with dynamite. And failed.
